Background of the Study

Stroke is a leading cause of disability and mortality globally, with a high prevalence in low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria (WHO, 2024). Risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and poor lifestyle choices contribute to increasing stroke cases (Adebayo & Salami, 2024). While stroke is largely preventable through lifestyle modifications and early medical interventions, public awareness remains low, leading to delayed treatment and poor health outcomes.

In Zamfara State, public health education programs have been implemented to create awareness about stroke risk factors, prevention strategies, and the importance of emergency response (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). However, the effectiveness of these initiatives in reducing stroke incidence and improving knowledge levels has not been adequately assessed. This study investigates the role of public health education in stroke prevention in Zamfara State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing burden of stroke, public knowledge about its risk factors and prevention strategies remains inadequate in Zamfara State. Many individuals fail to recognize warning signs, leading to delayed medical intervention and increased fatalities (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024).

This study examines the effectiveness of public health education programs in increasing awareness and promoting stroke prevention measures among residents of Zamfara State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of public awareness about stroke risk factors and prevention.
  2. To examine the impact of public health education on lifestyle modifications for stroke prevention.
  3. To identify barriers affecting the effectiveness of stroke prevention education.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of public awareness about stroke risk factors and prevention in Zamfara State?
  2. How does public health education influence lifestyle modifications for stroke prevention?
  3. What are the barriers affecting the effectiveness of stroke prevention education?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Public health education has no significant impact on stroke prevention awareness.
  2. There is no significant relationship between public health education and lifestyle modifications for stroke prevention.
  3. Barriers to stroke prevention education do not significantly affect awareness levels.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on residents of Zamfara State, assessing their knowledge of stroke prevention and the impact of public health education. Limitations include differences in access to healthcare information and socioeconomic disparities.
